St Ita’s welcomed Rathkeale AFC on a bitterly cold morning, with the Saints producing a determined and disciplined performance to secure a hard-fought victory.
The home side started brightly and were unfortunate not to open the scoring in the 15th minute. After a strong run from halfway, Iarlaith Murphy saw his effort drift narrowly wide of the right post. Just five minutes later, however, he played a key role in the opening goal. Ruairi McEnery’s strike from the edge of the six-yard box rattled the crossbar, and Murphy reacted quickest to return the ball into the danger area, allowing McEnery to finish confidently to the net.
The goal sparked the visitors into life, and Rathkeale began to dominate possession, applying sustained pressure on the Saints’ defence. Crucial interceptions from Liam and a number of important saves from James kept them at bay. However, five minutes before the interval, Rathkeale found a deserved equaliser following a period of sustained pressure.
Half-Time: 1–1
Rathkeale began the second half as they had finished the first, maintaining strong attacking momentum. A vital headed clearance off the line by Liam McInerney ensured the sides remained level. Gradually, the Saints regained their composure and began to reassert control.
Their persistence was rewarded when Micheál Casey struck the decisive goal with five minutes remaining, sealing a deserved victory for the home side.
Full-Time: 2–1
