Our junior team travelled to the paddocks on a cool Friday night for a game under light against Ballingarry in 1st round of Desmond cup.
Both sides had plenty of the ball early on without troubling either keeper.
The hosts took the lead from a corner which was finished at the front post in the 10th minute. Game was level again in the 20th minute when Jack long having received the ball on the edge of the centre circle headed goal wards and unleashed an unstoppable shot from 25 yards.
The hosts nearly regained the lead moments later when a well driven effort was tipped behind by Sean at full stretch. We created a few more chances through Callum and Jamie but never really tested the keeper.
We were caught again by more set plays when Aaron smith scored from a corner just after the half hour and Brian sheehy from a free kick which wasn’t cleared in the 41st minute. 2 minutes before the break ballingarry made it 3 without reply when Dean Geary was allowed too much time and space to the ball down inside the box and finish into the corner of the net.
HT 4-1
Changes were made at the break and they seemed to help the saints get back into the game along with less intensity from our hosts. The game set into a lull with lots of play in the middle third but no clear cut chances. More substitutes after the hour mark seemed to swing play in our favour. Paul worked the keeper in the 67th minute and Darragh has an attempt from the edge of the box with 20 minutes to play with was too high.
TJ Kelly pulled a goal back in the 84th minute after being put through by a neat ball from Jack Brennan. Darragh lane gave us hope when he finished smartly on 90 minutes with an assist by TJ. Unfortunately we couldn’t get the equaliser in the remaining time. While we can be positive about a better 2nd half performance, ballingarry would have been hard done by if they didn’t progress to the next round by the balance of play.
